Periodontal diseases are infections that are caused by bacteria, which grow and develop on the tooth surface and below and around the gum margin. It is estimated that there is about 700 different bacteria (microorganisms) which are capable of colonizing the mouth. The tooth provides a surface for the bacteria to colonise and to form a biofilms, (plaque) which in time can cause periodontal diseases, bleeding gums and bone loss around the tooth which can lead to tooth loss.
